It is true that most candidates will provide details of candidates who they can trust to give positive references when looking out for opportunities. Hence, references are often usually neutral to positive in their tones and response. However, the way questions are asked are also quite important and can elicit different kinds of responses. NitroHire is very mindful of this and has structured their questions and response options based on a lot of research on how reference checks should be conducted. In addition, when references are filling their responses, NitroHire also prompts them to encourage them to answer them, asks for specific examples to back their responses when needed, and normalizes the responses for a candidate across all references.
You should look at the summary reports to get a quick overview of how references feel about the candidate that you are interviewing. The aggregated rating, compared with the candidate’s self evaluation across different traits will help provide an overall picture of the candidate. The detailed reports will have more granular responses and specific examples that references would have shared, that will help you get the context in which the responses were provided for the candidate and these contexts could also be used as discussion points in subsequent interview rounds.
It is recommended that you add the RefCheck step as early as possible in the interview process, ideally just after resume filtering.
